Amazing Tri-Color Gum and Salted Paper
with Christina A. Anderson

This workshop will be a two-for-one: tricolor gum and salted paper! Salted paper is the process that began photography-on-paper’s history in 1839. It is the easiest process to do and requires the simplest of supplies: salt, silver nitrate, paper, and sun. Gum prints are a bit more complex; they are photographically controlled “watercolor” prints wherein gum Arabic is mixed with watercolor paint and photosensitive ammonium dichromate, and painted onto paper. When exposed to light in contact with an enlarged negative, the gum Arabic hardens into an image that is “developed” in plain water. Workshop participants will learn both processes fully, and while a gum print is developing we can wing outside for some sunlight and salted paper exposure, making the most, and the best, use of our time. We’ll get creative and combine the two processes in the end!

Workshop participants will create easy digital negatives, so a laptop with Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, or Lightroom plus rudimentary knowledge of one of these programs (sizing, sharpening, cropping images) is important. So is bringing lots of color digital images to choose from which will serve us for both tricolor gum and monochrome salted paper. Aside from a few simple supplies from home (teaspoons, hair dryer, towel, apron, and the like) the rest of the supplies will be covered under a class fee, including multiple pigment colors with which to experiment. Best of all, the Formulary’s chemistry supply house is right on “campus” so you can drive home with lots of supplies to start your own dimroom. Participants tend to end up working from 9AM–9PM, with some early birds and night owls working longer, so be sure to pack comfortable clothes and shoes. Taking a workshop in June is the best way ever to jump start your creative summer. See you there! Enrollment is limited so reserve a spot.
